Inspired by other popular publications, Betty takes on these issues and gives them a colorful and feminine gaze. There are two delightful series. First, the "Horror Swim Babes" a swimsuit issue magazine featuring icons of horror. The second is the "Videogame Slumber Party" a videogame manual zine showcasing the allure of being soft. "I illustrate and write zines that focus on femme characters from horror movies and video games. These characters are typically ornamental, have little dialogue, and barely any depth. My art reimagines these icons with relatable bodies (tummies, softness, different body types, queerness, and a variety of identities).
My zines take swimsuit issues, centerfold magazines, and video game manuals and reimagine them with a femme gaze, storytelling, and multiple illustrations featuring actual bodies. My work celebrates what modern media hides. I never got to see artwork like this growing up and felt that my body wasn't worthy, but drawing these pinups as they want to express themselves is healing for me and others."
