"My name is Ellie Maverick, I am a trans zinester, poet, and musician from Surprise, Arizona." "I’ve lived in the valley my whole life and when I’m not making zines, I enjoy video games, going to shows, building legos, and working part time at the phoenix public library. I am also happily married in a t4t relationship, which has filled me with more joy, hope, and comfort than I could’ve ever thought possible. Shine, was created to celebrate and uplift the local queer community and the amazing artists within it. I’ve been in the local music scene for a very long time and have recently gotten more involved with poetry and zine making, having performed my poetry in front of audiences and now working on these projects, I feel like I’ve discovered a passion I never knew I had. I would love anyone and everyone that would like to participate and have their voice heard to be a part of shine, because it won’t be the same without YOU!"
Themes for issue 1 include: Mental health, depression, and anxiety, but many of the poems are about overcoming these struggles and finding a way to move forward while still keeping the integrity of your feelings. Shine 1 also had snippets of political content, but it wasn’t meant to be fleshed out. Themes for issue 2 include: Identity and dysphoria are present, as well as euphoria. Themes for shine issue 2 will likely take on a lighter tone than the first issue, with queer and trans joy Find Ellie Maverick at the fest Sunday and follow her here:
