What are the PHX Zine Fest details? The 9th annual PHX Zine Fest will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, from 11a-4p at Rocket Space Gallery at Danelle Plaza in Tempe, Arizona. An art show opening will take place the day before the zine fest on Friday, October 24, and will display artworks by the zinesters in the fest. The fest is free to attend, has free parking, is open to all ages, and will welcome approximately 80 different zine makers over the two days. Saturday and Sunday will each host a different set of vendors. What’s the fest timeline?
Application & Fest Timeline:
Where should I park? Danelle Plaza, where Rocket Space gallery is located, has free parking available. It is on the southwest corner of Mill and Southern. Entrances to the parking lot are accessible by doing one of the following:
What are some nearby food options? Yucca Tap Room is right next door, and offers “bar food” such as pizza, wings, and pasta. Venezia’s Pizza on the southeast corner of the intersection offers vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options. Fry's grocery store is located on the northwest corner of the intersection for quick snacks, and there are several owner-operated restaurants in the surrounding shopping plazas. Vegan restaurants Desert Roots and Loving Hut are also located two streets east of the fest, at McClintock and Southern. I’ve never tabled before, what should I bring? Zines! There is no barrier to how polished or how professional a zine should be in order to vend or trade at Phoenix Zine Fest. Whether you have just one zine or a whole catalogue, we welcome work from all creators. Some people may have 50-page full-color photo perzines, and others may have two-page black-and-white poem zines. Essays about your personal life experiences are just as important as mini-comics featuring someone’s favorite original characters. We recommend offering a range of prices for your work. Many vendors choose to have something small for $1-3 dollars, something in the mid-range for $5-10, and a higher-priced item of $10 and above. Some people also like to trade zines with one another. Other items we’ve seen at zine fests include stickers, keychains, and prints. Tables and chairs are provided for vendors. We suggest bringing a table cloth, signage for your table, price signs, displays, a way to take payment, $1 bills for change, a snack, and a water bottle with a lid! This is my first event, what will the experience be like? Phoenix Zine Fest typically welcomes several hundred attendees throughout each day. Please note that the space can get noisy, as many people will be discussing their work and the concrete floors may amplify sound. The event takes place in a well-lit gallery with large floor-to-ceiling windows and overhead lighting. An all-gender restroom is available on the east side of the venue. We’ll have clear signage and volunteers available to assist with any questions. You’ll see many tables with zine vendors and be able to browse their zines, talk to them about their process, and purchase zines via venmo, square app, or by using cash. If you have specific accessibility requests or concerns, feel free to reach out ahead of time so we can support you. I’m thinking of bringing my kids, what will the experience be like for them? Vendors who consider their content appropriate for kids will display a green flag at their table. The “kid-friendly” designation is determined by each creator, so we encourage you to use your best judgment and review materials before sharing them with younger attendees. Thanks for helping us create a welcoming space for all ages! Is this event COVID-cautious? To help keep our community safe, masks are required for all attendees and vendors at Phoenix Zine Fest. Our volunteers will be on hand to help everyone remember, and will provide masks if needed. We highly recommend wearing a filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) such as a KN95, KF94, or similar for the best protection. We will also have air purifiers and hand sanitizer bottles throughout the space. We also ask that you help us protect one another by taking a COVID test before the event and staying home if you're feeling unwell. Thanks for doing your part to care for our community! What else is there to do in Tempe? In addition to serving food and drink, Yucca Tap Room is also a venue with an attached arcade called The Electric Bat. Brick Road Coffee, our local gay coffee house, is open late and located just a six-minute drive from the fest. Didn't see your question answered here?
