ADULT is a series of mini zines that feature snapshots of the author's adulthood, starting at the age of 18. They are not told in any particular order, rather written at points of importance to the author's life. They cover themes of finding and understanding one's identity, reaching life's milestones, and dealing with trouble along the way. There have been two episodes released so far.
I started to make zines as a way to express myself during the pandemic. The film industry completely shut down, with good reason, for about a year and a half, and I couldn't figure out a good way to make art. I had been studying animation for a bit before this, so I took this time locked away in my Brooklyn apartment to further explore the craft and take online workshops. After the Uprising in summer 2020, where people were sharing independent and underground ways to share information, I came across zines.
With filmmaking, there are dozens to hundreds of people who touch and cut down a project before it reaches the screen, adjusting it to fit the market and be acceptable to film festivals. With zines, it's just me and a tablet, telling a story. I had been looking for a low-stakes way of exploring my past, especially as I transition, in a way that is as truthful as possible. With "ADULT", and my other series "KID", I'm able to talk about myself and share myself with others without the need for it to be sensational art. It's just me.
