Program Testimonials

"Charissa facilitated a mini zine workshop at Girls Rock! Phoenix's first summer camp in 2016. It was a great introduction to zine making for our campers, and showed kids between eight and 17, many of whom had no previous knowledge of self-publishing, that they have the ability to create their own work without anyone's permission. Campers came away with amazing and very personal mini zines that they were very excited about and proud of. We loved working with her!" - Sarah Ventre

"Charisssa Lucille offered a workshop to my junior high/high school aged homeschool students.  This fall, our homeschool co-op offered a class to promote creative expression in the form of zines. She came in to introduce the topic and workshop on a few ways to get started; she began by bringing in content-appropriate examples of zines others had written. She explained the history of zines: how they have transformed over the years and how they continue to evolve. She then demonstrated an easy way of getting started with a small-sized folded zine using a single piece of paper. She included an example with instructions written in zine format to hand out to each student as well as promotional stickers. This workshop was a perfect way to get students thinking of new ways to creatively express themselves through writing and art. My students used this as a jumping off point to create a collaborative zine called Controversial Foods, as well as individual zines on topics like lamps, super heroes, mushrooms, space travel... Charissa is a clear presenter with a gentle and kind demeanor. She listened to the students and promoted discussion to begin their flow of ideas. I'm so grateful we had this workshop to get us started and grateful that Phoenix has the Wasted Ink Zine Distro to showcase, share, and market local zines and those from across the country." - Sarah Garcia

"I had the pleasure to attend Wasted Ink Owner, Charissa’s talk, “Get Paid: How to Distro Your Work,” and walked away with some great nuggets of information. I’ve always wondered what it’s like to own your own shop distro or otherwise as a working artist, and she provided great insight into how she manages it. She spoke to what her daily tasks are, how she manages her team, and what some of her favorite parts of owning the distro are. I find it fascinating that she gets all this “snail mail” and opens it up to find zines being shipped to her from all over the city, state, country, and even different parts of the world. It really makes you think about all the connections zinesters make on all sorts of levels. In terms of the local community, I think Wasted Ink Distro is such an important part of the Phoenix art scene. She spoke to where the idea came from, which was Phoenix simply not having any type of distro, and decided she was going to give it a go. She went on to discuss how she never knew how quickly the shop would blow up, but that just goes to show that the local Phoenix community was starving for a place like Wasted Ink. Charissa is such a positive, professional, and delightful speaker and I would highly recommend attending any other talks given by her." - Jessica Davis
