Cuidado features emerging artists based in the Southwestern region of North America, taking its name from the road-stop warning signs for rattlesnakes. This zine is a platform to bring a different awareness to the concepts, themes, and aesthetics explored by artists who are shaped by the region in a variety of unique and interesting ways. Initially aimed to be geared towards in-person zine festivals and distribution, Cuidado zine had to pivot to a virtual extension on Instagram where artist takeovers, artist interviews via Instagram Live, and local promotion of various shows, events, and exhibitions related to regional artists takes place. My mission with Cuidado beyond artist support as a DIY exposure platform, is to showcase the diverse range of independent artists working in the Southwest who have developed a connection to the region. I aim to draw focus and attention to rural and/or different locales as exciting hubs for new ideas and creative expressions thriving beyond coastal meccas. The name choice gives a hint to my curatorial disposition; I seek work with a hint of transgression and anti-establishment ethics--whether they be spiritual, environmental, political, or social.
