Yakapin Studios makes zines on jealousy, mental health, caregiving, cancer, advice on attending art school, humor, and movies & films! "HI-I'm Katie! I am a Filipina-American artist based in Los Angeles. I started creating zines in 2019 and haven’t been able to stop since. I really enjoy taking unfortunate experiences like having cat allergies, my expulsion from grade school, PMSing, or feeling jealous and creating zines that help me work through those experiences through reflection or humor. I love using zines as therapy for myself and finding people that can resonate with those feelings through my work! I rebranded to Yakapin Studio in 2022 in an effort to learn more about my Filipino culture and want to create more artwork inspired by my experience as a Fil-Am."
Here are my zines with a little synopsis on each - I put an * asterisk on the ones that aren't kid friendly Starter Pack - I didn't have any artists in my family growing up. So it was hard to navigate art school and the art industry after graduating. This is all the advice I'd give myself about mentally preparing for art school. *Why Did You Shave Your Head? - I wrote this zine when I was caregiving for my mom who had terminal cancer at the time. It isn't just about shaving my head, it is about shedding the person I was in order to become the person she needed most at the time. This is the most personal zine I've ever made since it was the last one my mom saw before she passed. Puppy & Kitty Pawsports - these are zines you can fill out with information on your pet cat or dog like closest vet, a place to stamp an actual pawprint, and empty passport pages in the back to fill with your adventures. This is ideal for any pet owner to have and give to pet sitters when they are away. Jealousea - I was experiencing a moment of jealousy when I wrote this. I wanted to personify jealousy as an ocean that this scuba diver dives into. Will she be consumed by jealousy or will she get out on the other side? Cat Allergy Club - this is a minizine about how I deal with my allergy to cats. It's double sided and has a print of cat contact perparedness tips on the back. *Pre Period Party - This is more about the emotional process that happens whenever I pms. Where I'm simultaneously beating myself up and then building myself up after that. It's double sided with a print in the back with all my favorite snacks. This is a faux risograph zine I made with my inkjet printer. Pink Slip - this is the first zine I ever made about getting expelled from a very strict private school and all the trips to the principal's office it took to get there. This has blank pink slips on the back you can fill out. Single Sentence Spoilers - I watch so much Netflix, I thought I would put my thoughts on certain shows to good use. I spoil 7 series I watched in a single sentence. This is also a faux risograph zine I made on my inkjet printer. Website
