Queer Democracy

This zine's creators, Deveyn and Loralei, are two local Arizonan queer folks who are seeking to create a deeper understanding of what democracy means to our community. After working closely on this project, we are excited to share both our research and art in zine form! 

We are creating a zine as a project through the Arizona Democracy Resource Center. Our center looks to empower community members and encourage civic participation. We advocate for equitable representation for all Arizonans and are committed to dismantling structural barriers to democratic participation, through programs such as Unlock Arizona and Arizonans for Fair Elections. 

Our zine seeks to reimagine what democracy looks like. While acknowledging traditional methods like voting and ballot initiatives are important, we aim to demonstrate that they are not the only way to uphold our democracy. Through embracing queerness we allow ourselves not only to escape the gender binary and sexual heteronormativity but  open up an opportunity to live and engage as a whole person in our community. Our zine highlights how queer folks have been doing both traditional and queer democracy for years and continue to do so. We reference both historical queer events as well as current queer groups in Arizona. The art from this zine will be inspired by historical AZ queer publications such as the Pride of Arizona and Western Express as well as historical photos of queer folks in AZ.
